Fourth Annual Walk Against Genocide

The Fourth Annual San Antonio Walk Against Genocide was held April 12th, 2015.  It commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.  Speakers included Mark Cross and Tina Karagulian, both descendants of survivors of the Armenian genocide, with music provided by Dana Clark Music.  Our speaker from the 3rd Annual Walk, Rwandan genocide survivor Alex Marie Secondaire, performed Of Vehi She'amda by Ya'akov Shwekey for us.  Poet Sossy Gulumian Kaltakjian and her daughter Aleen Kaltakdjian read a poem in Armenian and English about the Armenian genocide.  Click here to view pictures from the event.

The third annual San Antonio Walk Against Genocide will take place on April 27, 2014 at the Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community, 12500 N.W. Military Hwy.   Rwandan genocide survivor Alex Secondaire will speak and music will be provided by Dana Clark.  There will be a short walk.

Organizations working in the areas of conflict resolution, peace-building and genocide awareness/prevention will have tables where Walk participants can educate themselves and learn how to get involved.  Funds raised will support the San Antonio Coalition Against Genocide  to further support genocide prevention and other groups working to help survivors of genocide.

The Last Survivor is an award winning, feature-length documentary film that presents the stories of four Survivors and their struggle to make sense of tragedy by working to educate a new generation, inspire tolerance and spark a civic response to mass atrocity crimes. Following the lives of survivors of four different genocides and mass atrocities – The Holocaust, Rwanda, Darfur, and Congo – The Last Survivor presents a unique opportunity to learn from the lessons and mistakes of our past in order to have a lasting social impact on how we act collectively in the face of similar issues which still exist today.

The Texas State Legislature proclaimed April 2011 as Genocide Awareness and Prevention Month.  The first San Antonio Walk Against Genocide was held in April 2012.  This year we will continue to build on the precedent set by our legislature and hold the Second Annual San Antonio Walk Against Genocide, where people of all ages and backgrounds will gather to walk with genocide survivors.  The goal of the walk is to inform and engage the San Antonio Community about genocide and mass atrocities happening in the world today.

The second annual San Antonio Walk Against Genocide will take place on April 7, 2012 at Barshop Jewish Community Center.   Organizations working in the areas of conflict resolution, peace-building and genocide awareness/prevention will have tables where Walk participants can educate themselves and learn how to get involved.  Funds raised will support the San Antonio Coalition Against Genocide  to further support genocide prevention and other groups working to help survivors of genocide.

Winds of War: Dateline show on Sudan

Dateline followed George Clooney (along with John Prendergast of the Enough Project) as they visited Sudan and talked to the people there about what is happening in their country and the fear that war will break out again soon in response to the January 9, 2011 vote for independence by the south. The Last Survivor

Members of the San Antonio Interfaith Darfur Coalition spent the weekend working with film director Michael Pertnoy discussing future plans for the film The Last Survivor, which was screened at the San Antonio Film Festival today. We will be working with Michael to develop curriculum to go with the film to be used by educators interested in engaging their students in genocide studies. In addition, we are making plans to bring the film back to San Antonio in the spring of 2011 for a community screening and possible educator training. April SAIDC Meeting

April's meeting of the San Antonio Interfaith Darfur Coalition will be a special commemoration of Genocide Prevention Month. We will be showing a sneak preview of the film "The Last Survivor", discussing the activist response to Sudanese Elections and learning about genocide prevention and why it is important.

The Last Survivor follows the lives of survivors of four different genocides and mass atrocity crimes as they struggle to make sense of tragedy by raising awareness and promoting social activism. It won Documentary Feature and Audience Favorite at the Oxford (Mississippi) Film Festival and will play next week at the Dallas Film Festival. The sneak preview is a 20-minute version of the film. The full film may currently only be seen at film festivals.

Sudanese elections are scheduled for April 11-13. There is the possibility of the outbreak of violence around the elections, due to the illegitimate manner in which they are being conducted. We will discuss the activist response to the elections, including information on what YOU can do to help.

Finally, the meeting will include a discussion of genocide prevention and why it is in the interest of the United States to take a more proactive approach in this arena.

The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 13 at 5:30 PM at University Presbyterian Church, 300 Bushnell, San Antonio.

Paul Rusesabagina, of Hotel Rwanda fame, will speak at Church of Reconciliation on Sunday, March 14th, 2010. He will speak during the 8 and 10:30 am services and during the Adult Education time in the Parish Hall from 9:15 am to 10:15 am.
